This week I went on a 3 day cafe crawl. I went to the Linuxx, Starbucks, Courense’s and Nova Era. I read parts of two books: The Worlds Within Her, by Neil Bissoondath and Planet of Slums by Mike Davis. I charted my financial goals. I wrote in my journal. I caught some rays. I [...]

Right now I’m at work, it’s 2:03AM. I’m eating vegan rice pudding and cherry crisp. I’m reading about what is happening in Burma and looking at blogs.
On Friday I went to see A Tale of Three Cities, a photo exhibit that is part of the Contact Photography series. The photo above is from this exhibit. The work [...]
Where are you going next?

So ever since I got back from the Philippines (October 2007), people have been asking me where I will go next? When will I go back to Manila? When I got back I was mostly concerned about getting out of my friend Val’s basement studio. I slept next to her sewing machine for nearly two [...]

I’m almost finished reading it. 50 pages left. I started it on Friday. It’s amazing. Reminds me of conversations I had with Filipino Americans I traveled with in Manila in 2005. It was all about cultural identity. Here’s a review, if you’re looking for summer reading, look no further. This book will transport you out of wherever you [...]

I just read this amazing interview by Rochelle Jones from the Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID). Read on…

Ulaanbaatar, Hanoi or Manila?

I’m
I’m looking at CIDA internships. All of the internships are amazing, Ulaanbaatar, is my top pick, the organization: a feminist women’s rights/violence against women network. The work: assisting with an anti-sex trafficking advocacy/awareness/capacity building project. Hanoi’s option is a bit less intriguing as it’s a rural development project. I’m a city girl. Beaches would make up for that challenge, I think… Manila, [...]
In the same direction?

I think I should explain what this is about, the back story.
As with many changes in my life, it all started with a book. I don’t remember if I picked it or my spiritual mentor, at the time, picked it. But this book: A Long Obedience in the Same Direction, started me on a journey.
The book [...]

Set in the turbulent year of 1970, this poignant and humorous coming of age story thrusts twelve year-old Mauro (Michel Joelsas) into a maelstrom of political and personal upheaval. When his left-wing militant parents are forced to go underground, Mauro is left in the care of his Jewish grandfather’s neighbor in Sao Paulo. Suddenly finding [...]
